Case: Waverly Hills Sanitorium
Location: Louisville, Kentucky
Date: April 26, 2008
Built as a small tuberculosis hospital on July 26, 1910 to house 40
to 50 patients. By the 1920's the tb epidemic was so bad that they
quickly realized a much bigger hospital was needed. In 1926 the
new sections opened and was able to now accommodate up to 400 patients
but records show it often housed many more than that. The facility
was the most modern of its time with an on site radio station, laundry
facility, and child care center for sick parents who had no one to tend
to their children.
Unfortunately since antibiotics were not yet discovered, Waverly
Hills saw as many as 63,000 deaths over its many years of operation.
In 1961, after the discovery of antibiotics, the hospital was no longer
needed and closed. After being cleaned and sanitized, it reopened
in 1962 as a convalescent home until 1980 when it was closed by the
state for patient abuse.
